Symposium November 27th: ‘Getting Feedback’
A symposium on effective feedback methods and their significance in academic education
Effective feedback has been described by Hattie and Timperley (2007) as a system with three components: feed up, feed back, and feed forward. It provides students and lecturers with a threefold insight: clarification of learning outcomes, information about the progress of students and direction for attuning teaching and learning strategies. Feedback is thus a crucial element in the learning process of students. It is therefore that in the context of the Innovative Assessment Methods projecthttps://cdn.myclang.com/1/4/1537/35/m1BW0JOGsXuLJMfV6y_GgGOSOkkSX0djnZYtcXDYoZzTLfshu_qg8EM0i8vbii8X, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS)https://cdn.myclang.com/1/4/1537/35/1VP-eSrrhAW6jfyMgPFhms9XluXttKN55PZl6a7Pflc9Tx5mg1Hi4DtDMwwSxBAf is organising a symposium on the essence and value of an effective feedback system within educational practices at the university. The symposium aims to bring together educators from the University of Amsterdam and beyond who are actively engaged in implementing and developing feedback tools. The following questions will be addressed: How does feedback affect student learning and achievement? What is the role of feedback in education at the University? How can we implement feedback in an assignment, a course or a curriculum?
Next to reflecting on the role of feedback, the symposium intents to introduce educators to practical tools and methods for embedding feedback efficiently and effectively. Practitioners from the UvA and beyond will share their best practices (e.g. rubrics, online peer review platforms, portfolio and self-reflection).

At the end of the symposium the participant has:
* reflected on the meaning and significance of feedback in academic education; * been introduced to practical tools and methods for providing effective feedback; * connected with educators from the UvA and beyond who are working on feedback and its methods.

About the Innovative Assessment Methods Project Skills such as cooperation, leadership, reflection, etc. are difficult to evaluate based on the standard forms of testing. The IIS supports UvA lecturers who are interested in participating in a pilot aimed at implementing alternative concepts and procedures for assessment, evaluating these new tools and sharing their materials and experiences with others. Currently the IIS has made funding available for 12 projects such as developing tools for assessing objectives such as ‘creative writing’ and ‘collaborative skills’ and implementing methods for developing individualized learning objectives within educational programmes. Note that there is still funding available for courses that start in semester 2 of the current academic year. The IIS, or Institute for Interdisciplinary Studieshttps://cdn.myclang.com/1/4/1537/35/nhxzbFe3Xv1QI__7FxzF4OFwhp1qdsgfl4J7MewsPtt5LYwFEkX6Pf9LDN4r1zgK, is the UvA’s knowledge centre with regard to interdisciplinary learning and teaching. In addition to offering interdisciplinary study programmes, the IIS serves as a ‘knowledge workshop’ for the development of interdisciplinary education. To that end, the Institute wishes to facilitate experimentation and the exchange of knowledge on behalf of the participating study programmes and institutes.
