Dear colleagues, Herewith, I’d like to share some news with researchers interested in populism, emotions, framing, media bias and social identity. Last year, Agneta Fischer and I collaborated with colleagues from Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at UvA (Pere-Lluís Huguet-Cabot, Verna Dankers, Ekaterina Shutova), and recently we published two papers in the field of computational linguistics (as listed below). For our latest paper, we developed a novel deep learning NLP model based on RoBERTa (Liu, 2019) to detect populist attitudes, media bias, emotions and social identity. In the near future, our dataset (consisting of 6861 annotated Reddit comments) will be made publicly available through GitHub for the research community to be used. Huguet Cabot, P. L. General announcements: * Bert & Gijs are associate editors at Journal of Experimental Political Science and would like to point you to the following call: Call for Papers Special Issue on Validating Experimental Manipulations Journal of Experimental Political Science Submissions Due December 10, 2023 The strength of experiments lies in their ability to demonstrate a causal effect. Yet, for an experiment to live up to that promise, the treatment must carefully manipulate only the independent variable. To encourage further research in this area, we are calling for papers that validate experimental manipulations of constructs that are important to political science. Proposals are required to come in the format of a Registered Report. More details on the format can be found here<https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-experimental-political-s…>, but authors should submit a manuscript and study design prior to data collection. Reviewers will evaluate and comment on the quality of the design and the likely benefits of such a study being carried out. If accepted in principle, authors will be invited to pre-register their design, conduct the experiment, and submit the full manuscript for a final review. The final review will focus on whether authors faithfully carried out the experiment, rather than the substantive results. This format is particularly apt for validating experimental manipulations as reviewer feedback will be aimed at improving the quality of the design rather than evaluating the results.
