Dear Hot Politics Lab enthusiasts,
The Hot Politics Lab is organizing a two-day workshop at the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Science titled “Advances in Affect and Politics” on Thursday April 21 and Friday April 22 2022. Speakers include Lene Aarøe (Aarhus University), Manos Tsakiris (Royal Holloway), Vin Arceneaux (Sciences Po), Lala Muradova (Dublin City University), Agneta Fischer (UvA), Disa Sauter (UvA), Alan Sanfey (Radboud University), Carsten de Dreu (University of Leiden) and some of your friends from the Hot Politics Lab. Attached you can find the program.
I would like to hereby invite you to participate in the workshop. Note that the meeting will be offline only, and there will be no hybrid options. There are no costs associated with participation and coffee and lunch are included. If you would like to attend, please send an email to me (b.n.bakker(a)uva.nl<mailto:b.n.bakker@uva.nl>) by Friday April 15 the latest.
It is also possible to attend one of the two days but please register (send me an email) as the venue would like to know who will be in the building. Due to funding restrictions, the possibility to join for the tour in the Rembrandt house and dinner on Thursday are more limited for non-presenting participants (first come, first serve). So, if you would like to hear some cutting edge talks on the role of emotions in politics, then this workshop might be something for you. Feel free to spread the program to others’ who might be interested.
Thanks a lot,
Bert

Hi everyone,
This Friday (1/4) from 15:00 - 16:00 there will be another Hot Politics Lab meeting. During this session, Rune Slothuus (Aarhus University) will give a talk titled "What's in a Cue? How Citizens Use Party Cues to Learn About Policy". See below the abstract of his talk.
The talk will be followed by a Q&A, and everybody is welcome to join via Zoom: https://uva-live.zoom.us/j/96492065253<https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fuva-live.…> or join the live session in the Common Room (REC-B9.22) at 3pm (CET).
Talk abstract: An enduring concern among scholars of public opinion is that cues from political parties lead citizens to ignore substantive information about policy. In this article, we provide theory and evidence on the reverse perspective: that citizens use party cues to get informed about the substance of policy [to learn about the content of policy]. We argue that when political parties have clear policy reputations - when they are known for advocating certain values and promoting specific social groups - citizens will use party cues to make inferences about the substantive meaning of policy. Across six experiments conducted in two different national contexts, with multiple party sponsors and on various policy areas, we show that party cues lead citizens to form substantively different understandings of specific policies depending on the reputation of the party sponsor. Our results imply that parties might play a more constructive and informative role in democracy than they are usually credited for in existing research.
Note that the next lab meeting will be May 13th, due to several conferences and holidays. You can check out the program on our website<https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hotpol…>.
