Title: Decidable Versions of First-Order Predicate Logic. Abstract: There are two roads to decidability in first-order logic: one restricts attention to language fragments, or one generalizes the usual semantics. I will discuss a recent semantics by Aldo Antonelli, which gives a decidable version of predicate logic with an effective translation into the Guarded Fragment. I compare this with existing decidable semantics via general assignment models, with logics of generalized quantifiers, and with the move from relational semantics to neighborhood semantics. Dear all, please not that there will be no LIRa session this week. Instead, you are all invited to attend the LogiCIC Workshop. November 17-19, 2016 in Amsterdam. The programme starts on Thursday at 12:45. More information: https://logicicworkshop2016.wordpress.com/ This workshop is entirely devoted to the LogiCIC Research Project on “The Logical Structure of Correlated Information Change”. In this project we focus in particular on correlations that arise in situations in which the very act of learning new information may directly change the reality that is being learnt. An example is the way in which an introspective agent changes her beliefs when learning new higher-order information, i.e. information that may refer to her own beliefs. A similar situation arises when a scientist learns about a phenomenon by performing measurements that perturb the very phenomenon under study. More complex forms of correlated information change occur in groups of communicating agents when some agents’ beliefs about the others’ belief changes may trigger or influence their own belief change. In this interdisciplinary project, we will combine insights and techniques from a range of research domains, including logic, game theory, philosophy of science, network theory, quantum theory, belief revision theory, truth approximation and formal learning theory. Topics for presentations at the workshop will include: – epistemic and doxastic influence in social networks – formal models of knowledge and beliefs (plausibility models, topological models, neighborhood models etc.) – higher-order belief dynamics and knowledge updates – strategies for learning and truth convergence – Rational interaction, decision-making and planning in a multi-agent setting – Models of social-informational phenomena such as pluralistic ignorance, informational cascades, group polarization etc. Everyone is warmly invited to attend, but please do register on the website at https://logicicworkshop2016.wordpress.com/ Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by 7 November 2016. Title: Reliability-based preference change: lexicographic upgrade. Abstract: This work studies a particular method through which individuals might change their preferences according not only to what one another prefers, but also to a reliability ordering each one of them assigns to the group. More precisely, we consider agents that have not only a preference ordering over a set of objects, but also a reliability ordering over the agents themselves; then we study the effects of the public and simultaneous announcement of these individual preferences by defining an operation, the lexicographic upgrade, which receives a collection of preference relations plus a \'priority\' ordering among them, and returns a preference relation. We will review alternative definitions of this lexicographic upgrade, depending on the properties of the priority ordering, and present a sound and complete axiom system for a language describing this operation\'s effects. Time permitting, we will also discuss the effects of the iterative application of this upgrade, focusing in particular on the cases in which preference unanimity can be reached. The series aims at fostering a view of Logic as an interdisciplinary endeavour, and supports the creation of an East-Asian community of interdisciplinary researchers. Dear all, tomorrow we will have our next LIRa session. Speaker: Giovanni Ciná (ILLC, Amsterdam) Date and Time: Friday, November 4th 2016, 15:30-17:00 Venue: ILLC Seminar Room F1.15, Science Park 107. Title: Modal logics for typed processes. Abstract. I will introduce and discuss typed transition system, a structure that is meant to capture typed processes. After considering various examples, I will touch on the connections between these models and other known structures such as regular transition system (aka Kripke models), presheaves and coalgebras. In the second part of the talk I will introduce a typed modal logic that is complete for typed transition systems. The final touch will be a taste of the expressive power of typed modal logic and its extensions: I will consider several example across different disciplines (Topology, Foundations of Quantum mechanics, Social Choice) and describe how interesting properties can be captured in this language. The talk will be an overview of some results obtained in the last years and is intended for a broad audience. Hope to see you there! The LIRa team
