Title: Visualization and Understanding in Physics
Abstract.
The discussion about visualization and its relation to scientific understanding goes back to the early days of quantum mechanics, when Erwin Schrödinger and Werner Heisenberg each used 'Anschaulichkeit' to defend his own preferred version of quantum theory. After reviewing this history, I will discuss scientific understanding for current theories of quantum gravity, where spacetime is sometimes claimed to have no straightforward of natural visualization. I will end with a number of open issues vis-à-vis emerging (quantum) technologies.
Hope to see you there!
