Develop project-based education with an IIS grant

Do you want try out new forms of project-based education, or are you already in the process of doing so? Are you interested in teaching your students transferable skills and would you like to spend more time on further developing these ideas? Have you been triggered by an existing educational concept and would you like to implement it in your own programme or course? If any of this applies to you, then these funds from the IIS (Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, UvA) could offer you the chance to put your ideas into action.

For whom are the grants intended?

  • You are a lecturer or team of lecturers who teach one or more courses at the UvA and are (partially) responsible for the development of a course;
  • You are interested in educational innovation;
  • You are prepared to share your own knowledge and inspire others;
  • You hold a position at the UvA for at least 0.5 FTE, which will last (at minimum) for the duration of the pilot;
  • Your supervisor has granted you permission to spend hours on this project.

Available grants
The grants will be made available for courses scheduled to begin in block 6 of semester 2, and block 1,2 and 3 of semester 1 of the 2019-2020 academic year. A maximum of 80 hours is available for each grant; the precise amount will depend on the proposal submitted. These hours will be in addition to the hours already assigned for this course by your department.

Structure of the project
If you are awarded a grant, the hours you will receive should be spent:

  • Developing the skills-focused learning activities (before the course starts)
  • Implementing your plans while the course is in progress
  • Evaluating the results
  • Sharing the knowledge that has been gained with others

The IIS can offer you help and support as you elaborate your plans and share relevant best practices.

When
The deadline for submitting project applications for block 6 of semester 2, and block 1, 2 and 3 of semester 1 of the 2019-2020 academic year is Wednesday 27 February. Please use the application form found here to submit your grant request.

Criteria
The following criteria will be applied when selecting the grant recipients:

  • Degree of innovation demonstrated by the project and the expected improvement to education
  • Quality of the proposal (including substantiation, relationship between learning goals and objectives of the programme as a whole, plan of action, etc.)
  • The feasibility of the project within the set period of time
  • Relevance to teaching practice at the university
  • The educational experience and background of the applicant(s)
  • Distribution of the grants across the various programmes and faculties

Procedure

  • The applicant will complete the application form and sends his or her CV to onderwijslab-iis@uva.nl
  • Upon selection, the applicant must supply a written guarantee from his or her supervisor, indicating that if the applicant receives the funding, his or her department head or manager will ensure the applicant is given sufficient opportunity to conduct the project.
  • The application will be evaluated by a committee consisting various experts across university and the programme manager of the Education Lab at the IIS. This evaluation committee will submit a recommendation to the director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, who will then take a final decision regarding allocation of funding no later than 15 March 2019.
  • Once it has been concluded, the project will be evaluated in cooperation with IIS and the results will be shared within the UvA by the applicant, as well potentially included in a publication.

About the IIS

The IIS, or Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, is the UvA’s knowledge centre with regard to interdisciplinary learning and teaching.
