It will take place as part of the 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025). The workshop brings together researchers who are working on topics at the intersection of learning and logic, ranging from the logical foundations of learnability and computational learning theory to logical analyses of machine learning models and applications of machine learning in knowledge representation and reasoning. The workshop will consist of invited talks and contributed talks. It does not have any proceedings, and therefore previously published or ongoing work are both encouraged to be presented. Topics for the presentation at the workshop include, but are not limited to, the following: - Logical analysis of machine learning architectures - Techniques for learning logical concepts - Computational learning theory - Logic for formal learning theory - Informational complexity of learning - Graph learning - Applications of ML in knowledge representation and data management - Neuro-symbolic integration - Statistical relational AI - Logical and epistemic aspects of distributed learning - Logical aspects of learning in multi-agent systems - Logical analysis of (iterated) belief dynamics and information change - Logical techniques for explainable AI - Data-driven techniques for temporal logic specification and verification ============================ Submissions ============================ Submissions consist of a title, a short abstract, and an extended abstract in the form of a PDF file (one page, excluding references). Title: Preservation theorems for algebras of binary relations Abstract. Several areas of computer science (databases, knowledge representation, program verification, reasoning about knowledge and actions) feature logical languages in which one can construct complex binary relations from basic ones, through a certain set of operations (e.g., composition, intersection, inverse, ...). Examples include Kleene algebra with tests, propositional dynamic logics, Boolean modal logics, various query languages for graph databases, Tarksi's relation algebra. Underlying each of these is a "binary relation algebra" , i.e., an algebraic signature consisting of finitely many operations on binary relations. The specific set of operators, in each of the aforementioned languages, is typically chosen as a compromise between computational complexity and expressive power and/or may be based on a requirement to respect certain natural structural invariances (e.g., bisimulation). Preservation theorems link semantics properties of formulas to their syntactic shape. The most famous example is the Łoś-Tarski theorem, which states that a first-order formula is preserved under induced substructures (i.e., remains true if one passes from a structure to an induced substructure) if and only if it can be written without using any existential quantifiers (assuming negation normal form). Another famous example is the Van Benthem characterization theorem, which states that a first-order formula φ(x) is preserved by bisimulations if and only if it can be written as a modal formula. In this talk, we will review some recent results (both positive and negative) about the existence of preservation theorems for algebras of binary relations. (Algebraically, the results I will present can be equivalently viewed as addressing the question whether certain clones admit a finite set of generators). Specifically, I will discuss results from a joint paper with Bart Bogaerts, Brett McLean, and Jan van den Bussche (LMCS 2024) as well as from a joint paper with Tobias Kappé (POPL 2025). Within Epistemic Logic, the distributed knowledge of a group is typically defined as what is the case in all the worlds reachable by the intersection of the group's members' indistinguishability relations. Although this definition does not match the original intuitive idea (the logical consequences of the union of the individual member's knowledge), it still has a 'nice' behaviour. In particular, since intersection preserves the standard relational properties for knowledge (reflexivity, transitivity, Euclidicity), distributed knowledge is truthful and introspective (when the agents' individual knowledge is), and so will be the knowledge of the agents after a 'matching' communication action. Still, this strategy does not work properly when one switches to a KD45 (serial, transitive, Euclidean) notion of belief. Intersections do not preserve seriality, so the distributed beliefs of consistent agents might not be consistent, and consistent agents might become inconsistent after sharing their beliefs. The talk discusses an approach that uses maximally consistent sets of agents to deal with this issue. This is used, first, to define two forms of distributed belief that 'behave better' w.r.t inconsistencies, and then, to define a form of communication that preserves the properties of beliefs. Dear all, We would like to draw your attention to the vacancy below. best wishes, The LIRa team Two Postdoctoral Research Positions in Human(e) AI The Research Priority Area in Human(e) AI at the University of Amsterdam currently has two vacant Postdoctoral Researcher positions. The ideal candidates are active in any relevant area that can complement our current strengths within any of the areas in a) AI and Philosophy, b) AI and Law and c) AI and Communication Science, d) AI and Logic. Within AI and Philosophy, or AI and Logic, we encourage applications from candidates interested in developing advanced computational methods for studying culture and society. We welcome research on surveying and analysing the application of these methods, its limits and ethical issues. We similarly welcome work on the design of new formal tools e.g. in relation to social network analysis, opinion-formation, bias-detection, fairness, trust or research that can bridge methods used in symbolic and sub-symbolic AI. Within AI and Law, we are particularly interested in work on the emerging European digital framework, including the AI Act, the Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act or the European Media Freedom Act, and invite critical legal research on the operationalisation of these frameworks, and the extent to which they tackle the growing proliferation of (generative) AI in the broader media sector. The ability to work conceptually and in an interdisciplinary cross-faculty team will be essential. Within AI and Communication Science we are interested in any work on how citizens interact with AI systems in the realms of media and politics. This can focus, for example, on effects of AI in journalism, effects of AI in disinformation strategies or the effects of AI in political campaigns. Interest in and ability to work with computational social science and communication methods as part of an inter-disciplinary team is essential.
