Dear All, You are invited to join the upcoming Mellenbergh lecture on Wednesday, July 1st! Professor Eske Derks and Dr. Jackson Thorp will talk about the use of Genomic Network Analysis for better understanding psychiatric disorders. Speaker: Professor Eske Derks (QIMR Berghofer) and Dr. Jackson Thorp (QIRM Berghofer) Title: Mapping the Genetic Landscape of Psychiatric Disorders: From GWAS to Genomic Networks Abstract: After completing her master in Psychological methods at the UvA (2001), Professor Eske Derks focused her research on modelling the influence of genetic variation on human behavior. In this talk, Eske will discuss how genetics research has advanced from twin studies, through Genome Wide Association studies (i.e., comparing DNA profiles in millions of patients and healthy controls), to the use of genetic data to improve our understanding of the nature of psychiatric disorders. She will discuss how genetic data can be used to model genetic overlap across comorbid disorders, and to model phenotypic/symptom heterogeneity within disorders. Eske is head of the Translational Neurogenomics Laboratory at QIMR Berghofer, Brisbane, Australia and works in private practice as a psychologist. This will be a joint presentation with Dr. Jackson Thorp, who recently developed Genomic Network Analysis (GNA), an analytic framework that applies the principles of network analysis to estimates of genetic overlap derived from GWAS summary statistics. GNA estimates the genetic association between traits conditional on all other traits in the network, taking an otherwise dense structure of genetic correlations and deconvolving it to a sparse genomic network that retains the most crucial associations. Once a network is estimated, properties of the network (e.g. topological features, sparsity, node centrality), can provide important insight into the structure and genetic architecture of the system of traits. Dear All, You are invited to join the upcoming Mellenbergh lecture on Wednesday, June 10th! Professor Andy Field will talk about the use of OLS models in psychology. Speaker: Professor Andy Field, Professor of Quantitative Methods at the University of Sussex, UK (yes, the stats book guy!) Title: Statistical Practice in Psychology: The Numbers of the Beast Abstract: Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation is commonly used in psychological research to analyse data from a range of research designs. This talk explores the performance of OLS estimation under real world situations. I look at data showing that in practice Psychology researchers routinely collect data that is a challenge for OLS estimation. Furthermore, I show that OLS performs poorly compared to other estimation methods. I then shine the spotlight on research practice using data suggesting that Psychology researchers do not fully understand the conditions under which OLS models perform well. It turns out that they also do not attend fully to these conditions in their own work or when faced with a new analytical challenge! After this relentless barrage of negativity I will try to finish on a note of positivity by exploring some ways to improve statistical practice. Time and Place: June 10th, 11:00 - 12:00, Room M1.02
