Dear colleagues
I would like to thank you for making this a great year for the UP group, despite the downturns and frustrations. Our group is going excellent despite it all, and this is only thanks to our collective willpower, communication and motivation to make the world a better place.
As our teaching and examining proliferates but also slowly comes to an end, I am emailing to let you know that I shall have to be away from email in July as I urgently need to finalize my ERC grant application and to catch up with some form of writing.
Like all of us I have suffered a massive downturn in writing and research time – and time for life too but this is a different matter. - Basically, I have done null writing or research during the whole academic year. This has really got at me and July is the only time available to me to try and catch up with something meaningful in terms of research.
So in case you need to get in touch with me in July (and August) please find my phone number below and give me a call.
Thank you again for being great colleagues,
Maria

Subject: FW: Invitation for the opening of the anniversary MARE conference Tuesday 25 June, 9.30 am
Dear colleagues in GPIO,
Back in 2000, our department helped to found the social-science Centre for Maritime Research (MARE), that is currently supported by six European universities and has since gained a global profile. Next week we will be holding our tenth (jubilee) People and the Sea Conference at the University of Amsterdam, which will be attended by approximately 400 scholars from all over the world.
The opening will take place on Tuesday, June 25th as of 9.30 am in the Aula of the University of Amsterdam (Singel 411), and we cordially invite you to join us for this festive occasion. The conference programme book can be consulted at www.marecentre.nl<http://www.marecentre.nl> – please feel free to drop in any session that you might feel interesting!
With best wishes,
Maarten Bavinck/Joeri Scholtens
Dear all, please forward the following summary of the key discussion and action points from our away day
MASTERS
1) Create a coherent and usable database of alumni. Can we / do we have an alumni officer at the AISSR level or department level?
2) Enhance connections with our alumni by invitations to lectures, workshops etc. but also for occasional engagement in what we teach
3) Write articles with supervisors a desirable outcome; but this is not possible for all masters theses
PhD
1) There is clear and loud need for a common room for enchancing networking, connections, intellectual exchange and socializing
2) All staff are requested to be present at the research meetings with PhDs and have an input and give formal feedback
3) An anuual phd event will be organized by PhDs. The department could possible help with some funds. But other sources should be explored from the PhDs at AISSR that have not been tapped inot
4) There is need to build a stronger peer network within the planning group and /or with links to other groups in the AISSR. PhD students will take initiative on this
POST-DOCS
1) Strive for permanent jobs-internationally
2) Be pro-active in international networking and organize their own sessions when attending conferences. Invite the people you want to engage with in those sessions
3) Permanent academic staff (their mentors in particular) will discuss a strategy for getting teaching experience within UvA courses

Thanks all for a great away-day.
What a nice location! I especially enjoyed the sheep-soundscape.
I hope that Luca was still able to talk about his amazing book. Living the TOD life meant that I HAD to catch my train…
As I said (in the morning), I will invite you all in autumn to have an open brainstorm to see how our new partnership with BAM/AM and associated parties can become a UP group asset.
In the meantime, feel free to join this wonderful event with -amongst many great things- presentations by our Summer School students of this year. Sign up (because it is at NEMO and the room is limited): https://lnkd.in/gMrAM6j
Regards
Marco
Ps. Thanks for those that already did, but I’m raising money for children that are traumatized by war. You can contribute your two cents here: https://actie.voorwarchild.nl/actie/fietsprofessor
